What is a commission?
A commission is a custom piece of original art created for you or as a gift. It begins with a conversation about your ideas, who it is for, and why the landscape matters.
What makes Bernie Millar’s commissions a popular choice?
I am a landscape artist who paints places that shaped you (and me). My paintings are for people who are looking for something meaningful and lasting. I create art that feels personal, thoughtful, and far removed from the fast pace of social media. It’s for those who want their home or workplace to feel positive, calm, and reassuring.
- It suggests a journey towards new horizons.
- It captures light and atmosphere in moments of transition.
- It invites reflection on where the owner has come from, where they are now, and everything they have overcome.
Do you paint from photos?
Yes, sometimes. I may work from photographs, especially when a place has changed or a client wants to capture a special memory.
When possible, I prefer to visit the location myself to take in its light, atmosphere, and details. I also make plein air sketches and colour studies to help shape the final painting. If I cannot visit, I will talk with you about your memories and connection to the place so I can include what matters most.
What art materials do you use?
I currently paint in acrylic on canvas, canvas board, or paper. I also work in oils and watercolours. I like acrylic because it dries quickly, layers beautifully, and has a finish similar to oil paint.
How much notice do I need to give for a commission?
Please allow at least one month for an acrylic painting.
Oil paintings take longer to dry, so please allow around three months for completion.
I will send a progress photo halfway through. A 30% deposit is required to secure your commission.
Klarna is available for instalment payments.
So, any small changes can be discussed if needed.
What sizes can I choose from?
There are 3 choices of canvases:
Small: 9 x 12” (23 x 30.5cm) £300
Medium: 30 x 24” (61 x 70cm) £600
Large: 32 x 40” (81.5 x 102cm) £1,200
(Note: size of canvas may alter slightly, by agreement, if a scene requires it and the price remains)
If I am fully booked and cannot meet your timeline, you can purchase a gift card and book for a later date.
Will it be framed or unframed?
There will be an additional cost for professional framing that we can discuss beforehand.
How much will shipping cost?
There will be no additional shipping costs to the UK /Europe but anything outside the British Isles is a flat rate charge depending on the size and weight of the painting and where its destination will be.
When I pay for it, can the artist make prints to sell?
Yes. I, Bernie Millar, retain the copyright to all painted images, which means only I can make prints of it for sale. The owner of the original artwork may not reproduce it without my written permission. If you would like prints of your commissioned piece, you can request them before the original artwork is delivered.
That said, I believe a commissioned piece should feel exclusive to the client. I will not reproduce artwork that includes personal references agreed with the client. I may, however, make prints of paintings that are entirely my own idea and were simply reserved during the painting process.
