This plein air impressionistic landscape painting of a County Down scenic view was my submission piece which won me a place as a pod artist for Sky Arts, Landscape Artist of the Year. It features a distant view of the Mourne Mountain Range, a renowned Northern Ireland landmark.
The artwork captures the scenic Mourne Mountains, an area I loved to cycle to in my teenage years. The idea of reaching this beautiful destination made me keep cycling up the hilly terrain. I felt a great sense of achievement when I reached this point. I'll hold my hands up because I drove up those hills to paint it and this scene still holds an atmosphere of flight and freedom for me.
The fencing symbolises restraint and imposed boundaries that even the sheep have released themselves from, reflecting rural Irish landscape themes. The stile on the left is an open invitation for me to climb over the obstacles, inviting viewers to explore the natural beauty of County Down.
This is an ideal artwork that transports you to the tranquil County Down landscape, perfect for collectors of Irish landscape art, Mourne Mountains prints, and those seeking nature-inspired artwork or gifts celebrating Irish heritage and countryside views.
